The Island Assembly

The island's legislature, how laws are made until the first general election, and the bills before the Transitional Council.

The Assembly

Under Article 11 of the Constitution there is an Island Assembly of members elected by citizens, in the number and manner provided by ordinance.

Ordinances are passed by the Assembly and become law on the President's assent and publication in the Gazette (Article 12). An ordinance may authorise a Minister to make regulations and orders, which are published as legal notices.

The Transitional Council

Until the first Assembly is elected its functions are exercised by the Cabinet sitting as the Transitional Council, and ordinances are made by the President on the advice of the Transitional Council (Article 17).

The date of the first general election will be proclaimed in the Gazette.

Bills before the Council

Each has been published for comment. See every bill.

The Electoral Office

The Electoral Office will keep the electoral roll and run elections to the Assembly.
