Why we are consulting
The Reef Line protects the island's beaches and harbour and draws visitors to Coral Island. Anchors, groundings and unmanaged fishing damage it, and repairs take years.
What we propose
- A levy of $50 for each visit by a leisure vessel that moors or anchors in island waters.
- No levy for residents, citizens or vessels on Government business.
- The money raised would pay for reef wardens and fixed visitor moorings.
- Visitors would be asked to take the Reef Pledge when the levy is paid.
What happens next
We will publish a summary of the responses and the Government's decision after the consultation closes.
Questions
- Do you agree that leisure vessels should pay a levy to moor or anchor in island waters? Why?
- Is $50 for each visit the right amount? If not, what would you suggest?
- Should any other vessels or people be exempt from the levy?
- What should the money raised be spent on first?
- Is there anything else you want to tell us about protecting the Reef Line?
